About

THLEEP; Therapising For Sleep; a series of sound and light investigations; combined as a synaesthesia to reduce anxiety and promote healthier sleep cycles.

We explore the combination of neuro-acoustics and vision physiology, and present installations & performances as a supplement to daily requirements for the positive frequencies of light and sound – helping regulate our lives.

Background

2015 - 2020

Originally produced as ‘The Healing Chamber’, live sound and light performances promoting the positive attributes of sleep towards improved mental health – held during winter months when daylight is scarce.

2020 -

THLEEP developed online experiences, postponing live performance during the pandemic.

Production built towards a sound library (available for free on this site) to be made available and accessible to more people. The form of the work developed towards curated 40-60 minute compositions, passive meditations intended to calm the mind and restore equilibrium.

A series of live interventions were hosted utilising wireless headphones at festivals to create further immersion in outdoor public spaces.

In 2023 series of audio-only works were developed for transmission via radio and podcast format so that listeners could have access to experimental audio meditations on the go.

Rationale

The neurology behind routine exposure to daylight and more natural sound environments is one well documented throughout scientific and pseudo-scientific history.

In sound; whether a mother's voice or the rain on leaves, there is something regenerative about certain types of sound that elicit conditioned responses, even if not consciously recognised for their positive or negative properties.

In light; the full spectrum light of the sun has a significant role in maintaining equilibrium, producing bio-chemical reactions of hormones and neurotransmitters, essential for healthy cycles.

THLEEP is by no means a scientific symposium, we are artists interested in exploring the context of our work and the potential for scientific synergy. Presented by ‘Soul Fiction’ (Artist led events) these performances of light and sound explore the compounding relationship of art, science and community; an anxiolytic to calm the nerves and combat the stresses of day to day life with people set to invest in their better health.
